Armenia is the smallest Soviet republic. It is just a fragment of historical Armenia. In about AD 300 Armenia became the first state to adopt Christianity, and the Armenian Apostolic Church still buttresses national identity. Long prey to invaders, Armenia was finally conquered in 1375 and ceased to exist as a separate state. For hundreds of years Turks, Persian, and later Russians fought over the territory. The Ottoman Turks forcibly uprooted Armenians during World War I; more then a million starved or were massacred. Independent from 1918 to 1920, Armenia succumbed once again, this time to Soviet force. By
popular vote in 1991 Republic of Armenia became fully independent. Agriculture including cotton, vineyards and orchards, major industry chemical, mining, steel and paper.
