Estonia, was least populous Soviet republic. Came under Germanic rule in the 13th century. Its people were shape by other occupier's culture - and the Reformation (Estonia has remained Lutheran). Sweden ruled Estonia from the late 1500's ceding it and other Baltic provinces to Peter the Great in 1721. Its capitol Tallinn was founded by Danes in 1219 and prizes its medieval architecture. Estonia was independent from 1918 to 1940, when it was annexed by Soviet Union. In August 1991 the Parliament voted to reassert the republic's independence. Estonian's population is now 30% Russian, causing Estonians to consider their culture endangered. Estonia has a skilled work force. Agriculture, dairy products, timber and petroleum are exporting.

• Population: 1,506,000; density: persons per sq km 34(urban 70.3%; rural 29.7%).
• Capital: Tallinn 442,679; major cities: Tartu 105,844; Narva 79,094; Kohtla-Jarve 72,659; Parnu 51,963.
• Official language: Estonian.
• Ethnic groups: Estonian 61.5%; Russian 30.3%; Ukrainian 3.1%; Belorussian 1.8%; Finnish 1.1%; other 2.2%.
• Religion: predominantly Evangelical Lutheran, with Orthodox and Baptist minorities.
• Gross National Product: $2.820 per capita(1992).
