Plateau and desert dominate Kazakhstan, second in area to the Russian Republic. Kazakhs are a Muslim people of Mongol descent who speak a Turkic language. Largely nomadic, they emerged as a distinct people in the 15th century. Russia consolidated its rule over the region during the 19th century. During the 1950s Moscow unveiled the Virgin Lands program to cultivate what had been Kazakh pastures. Kazakhstan now grows a third of former Soviet Union's wheat. A million square miles of steppe desert, and mountains is reach in natural resources as lead, zinc, copper and oil. Independent was declared in 1991.

• Population: 16,669,000; Density: persons per sq km 6.1(urban 56.6%; rural 43.4%).
• Capital: Almaty (Alma-Ata) 1,156,200; major cities: Qaraghandy (Karaganda) 608,600; Shymkent (Chimkent) 438,800; Semey (Semipalatinsk) 344,700; Pavlodar 342,500.
• Official language: Kazakh.
• Ethnic groups: Kazakh 41.1%; Russian 37.3%; Ukrainian 5.3%; German 5.0%; Uzbek 2.1%; Tatar 2.0%; other 7.2%.
• Religion: predominantly Sunni Muslims; with a Christian minority (mainly Russian Orthodox and Baptist).
• Gross National Product: $1,110 per capita(1994).
